Chief Mission Officer

Arthritis Foundation

This is a Full-time position in Atlanta, GA posted November 15, 2021.

LOCATION: Remote with expected travel to the Home Office (Atlanta, GA)

POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Chief Mission Officer (CMO) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of the Arthritis Foundation’s mission delivery activities and reports directly to the Executive Vice President.

The CMO will have primary responsibility for achieving the Foundation’s three mission-critical goals of accelerating scientific discoveries, improving patient experience, and increasing the effectiveness of public and private advocacy including the development and implementation of programs in research, public health, public policy, advocacy, and consumer health.

The CMO will create a cohesive framework for coordination and integration of our research, public health, public policy, advocacy and consumer health initiatives to maximize progress of the Foundation’s mission.

This includes monitoring the effectiveness of these initiatives in accomplishing the goals of the strategic plan and to fully integrate these initiatives into the fund raising and business fabric of the Arthritis Foundation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

1.

Assess, lead and implement the development of priorities, goals, strategies, operating plans, and metrics for the execution and assessment of the Foundation’s mission-related initiatives.

2.

Position and frame the Arthritis Foundation as the leader in arthritis-related mission, advocacy and scientific programs.

3.

Drive collaboration across the Foundation’s public health, public policy and advocacy, research, and consumer health initiatives.

4.

Ensure cross-functional coordination and integration to increase the effectiveness and relevance of the Arthritis Foundation’s mission initiatives in meeting the needs of our patient community.

5.

Develop and implement outcome measurement/evaluation methods to access the quality and success of program offerings.

6.

Manage and nurture a comprehensive portfolio of relationships with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, trade associations, government agencies and other non-profits that would further the Arthritis Foundation’s mission.

7.

Develop innovative approaches to building new multi-stakeholder consortiums and partnerships to help advance our mission-related initiatives.

8.

Clearly communicate and articulate the Foundation’s mission work to effectively mobilize numerous constituencies including those living with arthritis, healthcare professionals, staff, volunteers and donors

9.

Partner with senior leadership to ensure mission-related initiatives are seamlessly integrated into all levels of the Arthritis Foundation.

10.

Manage a team of 20, with 3 direct reports in advocacy, science and mission delivery.

11.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President and/or Chief Executive Officer.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

1.

A minimum of 10 years progressive healthcare or non-profit management experience with a focus on one or more of the following: mission, strategy, patient engagement, research or public health.

2.

Proven track record of managing and developing teams to establish goals and achieve outcomes that meet the needs of customers/constituents.

In particular, demonstrated ability to integrate organizational components behind shared objectives. 

3.

Demonstrates the ability to inspire individual and organizational excellence through the use of effective coaching skills and by demonstrating exemplary behavior; regularly interacts with the community at large to assist its understanding of the mission. 

4.

Proven track record of success in organizations where influence is a critical component of the decision-making process.

5.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal relationship skills, with ability to lead, direct and motivate volunteer and staff teams.

Communicates clearly and concisely so that collaborative relationships are established throughout the organization which fosters credibility and trust among colleagues. 

6.

Ability to lead others to work interdependently and collaboratively to accomplish goals and outcomes.

7.

A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university.

An advanced degree (MPH, MBA, MS, or PhD) would be a plus.

8.

Travel as required.
