We are looking for a Director of Database Development for a direct hire position located in the Chicago area.

This position does have remote flexibility.

Overview: Enable the strategic use of company data in support of corporate goals and objectives.

This role must work effectively with all departments and with executive leadership, external consultants, auditors and other stakeholders to develop and present a strategic vision for the acquisition, processing, governance and delivery of critical business information.

The role leads a team of database and report developers to analyze business needs, design, build and maintain operational databases and the enterprise data warehouse and associated reporting structures and applications.

The role also leads the team that supports ETL development and maintenance from various source systems.

Responsibilities: Operational Management
● Manage and provide direction for the Database Development Team in support of business operations.

● Coach and influence team members to take positive action and accountability for assigned work.

This includes hire and termination responsibility.

● Identify and address data discrepancies, data quality issues, inefficiencies, gaps, and work to ensure data consistency and integrity.

● Where necessary, prepare, establish, and monitor budgets.

● Create short-term tactical solutions to achieve long-term objectives and an overall data management roadmap.

● Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing data across the organization.

● Implement models for new data store development and/or changes to existing data stores for systems, applications, data warehouses, and data marts.

● Collaborate with project managers and business unit leaders for all projects involving enterprise data; includes working with end users to identify, create, and deliver reports according to requirements.

● Perform cost estimates for data migration between development, test, and production systems, and plan and coordinate these migrations.

● Document the data architecture and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture.

● Monitor database access and performance issues.

● Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to data systems.

● Develop and deliver long-term strategic goals for data architecture vision and standards in conjunction with data users, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders.

● Coordinate and work with other technical staff to develop documented database architectures, environment, coding standards, and policies and procedures.

● Establish methods and procedures for tracking data quality, completeness, redundancy, and improvement.

● Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing data across the organization.

● Conduct data capacity planning, life cycle, duration, usage requirements, feasibility studies, and other tasks.

● Create strategies and plans for data security, backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and archiving.

Ensure that data strategies and architectures are in regulatory compliance.

● Evaluate, recommend, and install data products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

● Evaluate, recommend, and install data components including hardware, database management systems, prebuilt schemas, ETL software, data mining tools, metadata management tools and database access tools.

Requirements: Experience
● Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, information systems, computer engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Master’s degree a plus.

● Ten or more (10+ years) of Database Administration experience.

● Ten or more (10+ years) of Data Architectural experience.

● Strong familiarity with applicable data privacy practices, regulations, and laws.

● Experience with data design and architecture; data mining; large-scale data modeling; and business requirements gathering and analysis.

● Experience implementing enterprise data management processes, procedures, and decision support.

● Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting data warehouses.

● Experience with enterprise repository tools, data modeling tools, data mapping tools, and data profiling tools.

● Experience with enterprise data technologies including database platforms, ETL tools, Business Intelligence tools, and SQL Server.

● Experience with leading transitions and conversions from less robust systems, like Microsoft Access, to enterprise-grade solutions.

● Experience with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), web services, enterprise data management, information security, applications development, and cloud-based architectures with federal clients.

● Experience with information systems and data life-cycle management best practices and methodologies, formal systems engineering life cycle (SELC), and systems development life cycle (SDLC).

● Experience with Agile and Waterfall development methodology and concepts.

● Experience with configuration management and version control processes.

● Proven project management experience.

● Experience with business requirements analysis, entity relationship planning, database design, reporting structures, etc.
